Gardeners Told Easy Way To Get Bigger And Better Hydrangeas With One Kitchen Scrap

by jingji34

Hydrangeas are known for their stunning summer blooms, and a simple, cost-free method can make these flowers even more spectacular. Katie Femia, a gardening expert and founder of The Homespun Hydrangea, has revealed that orange peels can be used as a homemade fertiliser to significantly boost the growth of acid-loving plants like hydrangeas.

“Orange peels help feed the soil and create a healthy foundation for your plants,” Femia explained. “They are also budget-friendly, offering a free source of nutrients.” Rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, orange peels can promote larger and more robust hydrangea blooms. These flowers thrive in slightly acidic soil, and orange peels can enhance soil quality while potentially turning the blossoms a vivid blue.

Moreover, the strong scent of orange peels can deter pests with sensitive noses, such as aphids, ants, rodents, and even cats, according to reports from the Express.

How to Make Orange Peel Fertiliser for Hydrangeas

Materials Needed:

  1. Orange Peels: Collect and rinse them to remove any residual chemicals.
  2. Wax Paper: Line a baking tray to prevent the peels from sticking.

Steps:

Preparation: Rinse the orange peels and spread them in a single layer on a wax paper-lined baking tray.

Drying: Place the tray in the preheated oven and bake for approximately 90 to 120 minutes. Check the peels every 30 minutes to ensure they are drying evenly.

Pulverising: Once dried, crush the peels into an ultra-fine powder using a food processor or by placing them in a sandwich bag and pounding with a rolling pin.

Application: Transfer the crushed peels into a sealable container and sprinkle or bury them around or beside your hydrangea plants.

Femia added, “Your soil will quickly absorb the nutrients from the orange peels, enriching it and increasing its acidity. This will help your hydrangeas thrive and produce even more vibrant blooms.”
