by jingji34

In an interview with the Province of South Holland for their magazine Zuid-Holland in Beeld, Leon Ammerlaan, a greenhouse owner, was asked to compare his love for plants with his enthusiasm for geothermal energy. He paused for a moment before responding. Although he clearly has a deep affection for his green Dracaenas, Yuccas, and Kentias, his passion for geothermal energy is even more evident.

In 2007, when gas prices rose dramatically from 10 to 40 cents, Leon began exploring alternative ways to heat his greenhouse. By 2010, he had successfully established his first geothermal well. Reflecting on his experience, he expressed regret that he did not have the knowledge he has now when he first started. He believes that having this knowledge earlier would have helped him avoid many mistakes. Leon is convinced that geothermal energy holds significant potential for the future.

However, he emphasizes the need for heating networks to expand in order to fully utilize geothermal energy. “To maintain horticulture and industry in the Netherlands, we need solutions like these,” he asserts. Leon’s experience and insights highlight the importance of exploring and implementing sustainable energy solutions to address the challenges faced by the agricultural and industrial sectors.
