Thousands of visitors flocked to Kazanlak this past weekend to partake in the annual Rose Festival, a vibrant celebration that honors Bulgaria’s iconic oil-bearing rose and the centuries-old tradition of rose cultivation in the Rose Valley.
The event attracted a diverse crowd, including Vice President Iliana Iotova, government ministers, diplomats, and foreign ambassadors, underscoring the festival’s cultural and economic significance.
Marking its 122nd year, the festival pays homage to the local rose growers whose livelihoods have been intertwined with the delicate flower since Bulgaria’s Liberation. The day commenced with authentic rituals signaling the start of the rose-picking season.
Demonstrations of traditional rose-picking and distillation techniques highlighted the community’s enduring connection to this age-old craft, which remains a vital part of Kazanlak’s identity rather than a mere tourist attraction.
The festivities continued with a lively parade through the streets of Kazanlak, led by Queen Rose 2025. Over 4,000 participants dressed in traditional costumes showcased regional dances and performances, bringing to life the rich cultural heritage of the Rose Valley.
Nestled south of the Balkan Mountains, Kazanlak sits at the heart of the Rose Valley—a region spanning approximately 1,895 square kilometers and known as Bulgaria’s primary rose oil production center. Other key towns in the valley include Karlovo, Sopot, Kalofer, and Pavel Banya.
Rose cultivation here is a painstaking process requiring hand-picking each blossom during the May-June harvest. The valley’s fragrant air during this season symbolizes not only the beauty and abundance of nature but also the deep-rooted traditions and communal gratitude that define Bulgaria’s cultural landscape.
