Gardening enthusiasts are well-acquainted with the ongoing struggle to protect their plants from pests such as slugs and snails. However, rats pose a particularly challenging problem for those seeking to enjoy their gardens in peace.
Robert Collins from MyJobQuote.co.uk has recently shared his top tips for keeping rats away from gardens. His advice centers around a common household item—essential oils. According to Mr. Collins, essential oils are a safe and effective natural method for deterring rats. “Peppermint, Eucalyptus, and Citronella are particularly effective,” he says. The strong scent of these oils acts as a natural deterrent.
To create a homemade rat-repellent spray, Mr. Collins suggests mixing one part essential oil with nine parts water in a spray bottle. This solution can then be applied along garden boundaries and in areas where rats are known to frequent. This method has been reported to be successful by North Wales Live.
In addition to essential oils, Mr. Collins recommends using onions to deter rats. The pungent smell of onions can prevent rats from entering the garden. He advises slicing a few onions and scattering them around the garden’s perimeter or at any obvious entry points. Onions are readily available at local supermarkets, with prices as low as 21p at Tesco or 95p at Waitrose.
Steel wool is another effective tool for blocking rats’ access to gardens. Mr. Collins explains, “If there are visible access points where rats are entering and exiting, stuff some steel wool into these gaps. Steel wool is a great barrier because rats find it difficult to chew through.”
To seal rat entry points effectively, Mr. Collins suggests filling gaps with steel wool and then applying caulk or spray foam around it to ensure it stays in place. He also warns of potential entry points via chimneys, recommending the installation of chimney grates, preferably by professionals. Additionally, vents should be sealed with mouse mesh, and any gaps in the roof can be filled with sealants, roof tar, or tiles.
Mr. Collins emphasizes the importance of using metal to seal gaps, as rats can chew through most other materials. “Whenever you seal a gap to prevent rats from accessing your property, it’s crucial to use metal,” he advises.
With these practical tips, gardeners can take proactive steps to protect their plants and enjoy their gardens without the nuisance of rats.
