As summer approaches and temperatures rise, many gardeners are looking for ways to keep their lawns green and lush. With the end of May and the “No Mow May” initiative, it’s crucial for gardeners to take action to ensure their grass is healthy and thick before the summer arrives.
The “No Mow May” campaign, initiated by Plantlife, encouraged gardeners to refrain from mowing their lawns throughout the month to promote biodiversity. This allowed wildflowers and plants to grow and bloom, providing food and shelter for wildlife. However, now that May is over, gardeners need to start taking care of their lawns again.
According to gardening expert Fiona Jenkins from My Job Quote, regular mowing is essential for maintaining a healthy lawn. She explained, “Regular mowing encourages grass to grow through a process known as the ‘stimulation effect.’ This works similarly to how we are advised to get our hair trimmed regularly to promote faster growth.”
“When you mow your lawn consistently to an appropriate height, you remove the top portion of the grass blades, prompting the grass to produce new shoots and leaves. This results in a denser turf and helps remove weeds that may be competing for sunlight, nutrients, and water,” Jenkins added.
Regular mowing during the summer can prevent the lawn from drying out. However, it’s important to adjust the mowing height and frequency to avoid negatively impacting the grass’s growth and overall health.
Gardening doesn’t require extensive expertise, just a bit of interest and effort to keep your outdoor space tidy and organized. With the warmer temperatures and the perfect season for hosting barbecues or gatherings, a well-maintained lawn can enhance the enjoyment of your outdoor space.
