Last week, the RMCG Group conducted an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) workshop aimed at reducing chemical use in the New South Wales cut flower industry. The event was hosted by Brimstone Waratahs at their site in The Oaks, NSW, 2570.
The workshop was designed to inform and upskill growers in managing pest and disease issues through an integrated approach, leading to a reduction in chemical use. It also provided advice on best practices for chemical use and storage.
The event featured presentations from three prominent industry experts: Associate Professor Robert Spooner-Hart from Western Sydney University, Dr. Len Tesoriero of Crop Doc Consulting, and Tony Bundock MEd of Protected Cropping Australia and Genesis Horticulture. Jesse Clune from the RMCG Group served as the Master of Ceremonies. The workshop was well attended, with 15 growers and industry representatives present.
Robert and Len kicked off the event with a presentation introducing Integrated Pest and Disease Management (IPDM), common pests and diseases, and their management strategies. This was followed by a scouting field walk at Brimstone Waratahs’ site, allowing participants to examine specific disease and pest issues and the control measures that could be implemented.
Tony then presented on chemical use and safe handling practices, highlighting how an integrated pest management approach can effectively utilize chemical applications as a control measure.
To further support the growers, Garden City Plastics generously donated a number of 0.5-litre measuring jugs, which the attendees were able to take home.
The day concluded with a BBQ and networking session. Plans are underway for additional workshops in the coming months.
