UK Households Urged To Plant Three Flowers If They Suffer With Common Allergy

As the summer season kicks off in June, gardeners and outdoor enthusiasts may find themselves battling hay fever, a common allergy triggered by airborne pollen. However, gardening experts have identified a few simple yet effective strategies to alleviate symptoms and enjoy the outdoors without constant sneezing and coughing.

Hay fever is a year-round issue for many, with different types of pollen causing problems at different times. Tree pollen is the culprit in winter and spring, while grass pollen takes over in summer, followed by weed pollen in autumn. For those who find over-the-counter remedies insufficient, experts recommend specific plants that can help reduce pollen exposure.

According to James Higgins, a gardening expert from Grass427, nine out of ten hay fever sufferers are allergic to grass pollen. He suggests planting flowers that are pollinated by insects, such as bees and wasps, as these produce less airborne pollen. “These flowers rely on insects to transfer pollen rather than releasing it into the air, which makes them a better choice for hay fever sufferers,” explained Higgins.

Among the recommended plants are sunflowers, lavender, and honeysuckle. These not only add beauty to the garden but also require minimal care. However, for those with severe allergies, alternative solutions like artificial grass may be necessary.

Higgins also advises avoiding trees such as birch and oak, which are known to produce high levels of pollen. He recommends spending time outdoors in the afternoons rather than mornings or peak pollen days, as pollen levels tend to be lower later in the day. “Monitoring pollen counts is crucial, as they can vary based on weather, wind, and time of day,” he added.

In addition to planting allergy-friendly flowers, gardeners should take precautions when working outdoors. Wearing gloves, long-sleeved shirts, and even masks can help minimize exposure to pollen.

While there is currently no cure for hay fever, taking these proactive measures can significantly reduce symptoms and allow gardeners to enjoy the beauty of their outdoor spaces without the discomfort of allergies.
