The orchid, scientifically known as Grammatophyllum speciosum, is native to Cambodia and was once found in the Cardamom mountain range of Koh Kong province, as well as in the Dangrek mountain range of Preah Vihear and Siem Reap provinces.

This orchid holds the world record for being the tallest in the world, as recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records. Some plants have reached up to 7.62 meters (25 feet) in height and can weigh up to two tonnes. The orchid’s flower stalks can grow to two meters long and hold between 80 to 100 beautiful flowers.

Cambodia is home to over 500 wild orchid species, with more than 200 documented for conservation and study. The Sok An Phnom Kulen Orchid Center, established in 2018 and officially opened in August 2023, is dedicated to preserving and restoring these rare plants.

It focuses on research, breeding new orchid varieties, and conserving endangered species.

In addition to its important conservation work, the center also plays a role in educating the public about Cambodia’s wild orchids and biodiversity. Visitors can explore the scenic beauty of the center, which offers a fantastic spot for ecotourism and relaxation.

Currently, the garden is being enhanced through a partnership between the environment ministry and Soma Group.
