Smart Tips to Grow Thriving Perennials and Flowers This Summer

by Anna

As summer approaches in West Michigan, many gardeners are eager to start planting perennials and flowers to brighten their outdoor spaces. However, creating a flourishing garden doesn’t have to drain your wallet if you plan carefully and choose plants wisely.

Katey Romence, co-owner of Romence Gardens & Greenhouse in Grand Rapids, emphasizes the importance of understanding your garden’s light conditions before planting.

“Walk your space and observe where the sun hits throughout the day,” she advises. Knowing whether your garden receives full sun, partial sun, or filtered light helps you select plants that will thrive in those conditions.

Patience is another key to a successful perennial garden. Instead of planting everything at once, start with a solid framework such as trees or shrubs, then gradually add perennials over time.

This approach allows plants to spread naturally and keeps your garden neat and manageable.

Understanding gardening terms can also help. For example, “full to part sun” typically means a plant needs at least five to six hours of direct sunlight, preferably in the afternoon.

Early morning or late-day sun usually isn’t enough for sun-loving plants.

Watering consistently is crucial to keep your flowers and vegetables healthy. Romence stresses, “Do not forget to water. Consistency is key, especially for annuals, herbs, and vegetables like tomatoes.” Both overwatering and underwatering can harm plants, so learning the right balance is essential.

With these expert tips—knowing your space, planting patiently, understanding plant needs, and watering properly—you can enjoy a vibrant, budget-friendly garden filled with beautiful perennials and flowers all summer long.
