As May arrives, many gardeners in Western New York are eager to start planting, but unpredictable weather makes it tricky for plants to thrive. I visited a local garden shop in Clarence to get some advice on the best time to begin planting.
At Thompson Brothers Greenhouse, Julie Pavlock shared, “I think people are anxious because the weather is nice,” and Dawn Trippie added, “I’m seeing people very excited for the spring this year.” Inside the shop, aisles were filled with vibrant annuals and perennials ready for gardens, but Trippie explained it’s still too early to plant outside.
“People want impatiens now, but it’s way too early,” said Trippie. “The winds will destroy hanging baskets, so hold off on those for now. I recommend pansies – they’re perfect for early spring planting.”
Due to the region’s fluctuating weather, it’s best to wait until Memorial Day to plant outdoors. Trippie reassured me that there’s no rush, as 95% of the flowers at the greenhouse are grown over the winter and will be available well into the season.
Donna Hyman of Marilla was excited to start planning her garden, saying, “I get ideas for my pots and everything.” Despite the challenges of the economy, she wasn’t concerned about spending on flowers: “When I want to plant, it doesn’t matter the cost.”
Thompson Brothers also offers a unique service for gardeners. Pavlock explained, “Customers can bring in their empty pots, and we’ll fill them with soil and plants. Some want specific colors or styles, while others just leave it to us to make it look pretty.”
With spring weather still unpredictable, patience is key. But with the right timing and advice, Western New Yorkers can look forward to a beautiful garden season.
