China remains one of the world’s top flower producers, exporting millions of flowers each year. The country’s potted plant sector continues to grow rapidly, now making up 7.65% of total flower output and 30.08% of total sales in the domestic market.
Phalaenopsis Orchids in High Demand, Traditional Varieties Decline
Among flower types, Phalaenopsis orchids have shown remarkable growth. Their production rose by 20% compared to last year. In contrast, traditional flowers such as bromeliads and anthuriums are facing falling prices. This drop is due to weaker sales and reduced consumer interest.
Bulb flowers—including lilies, amaryllis, and tulips—are becoming more popular, especially on online platforms. As a result, their production is rising. On the other hand, succulents are losing popularity. This has caused a sharp decrease in their supply.
The Rhododendron market is slowly expanding. Ilex verticillata, a plant used as both a potted plant and a cut flower, remains stable in cut-flower sales. However, the demand for potted Ilex verticillata is rising. Its production has jumped from 1 million pots to over 3 million, especially in Shandong and Yunnan, the main growing regions.
Maranta arundinacea is facing intense competition due to the availability of many similar plant varieties. Despite this, around 7 million pots have been produced.
Tropical Plants Get a Boost from E-Commerce
Tropical plants are gaining a stronger presence in the market. Much of this growth is being driven by online platforms, which have become major channels for promotion and sales. Prices for tropical plants online are often lower than in brick-and-mortar stores, making consumers more price-conscious.
Potted Plant Exports Surge, Imports Also Rise
China’s export of potted plants has grown significantly. It rose by 39.4% from the previous year, totaling $260 million. Potted plants now account for 53% of all flower exports. In 2024, imports also increased slightly by 2.1%, reaching $23.78 million.
Smaller Plants Dominate Future Trends
Looking ahead, small potted plants are becoming more popular. They are easier to ship, affordable for online buyers, and suitable for small spaces like desks and balconies. This trend is expected to shape the next phase of growth in China’s flower industry.
