In a recent Instagram video, Alan showcased his healthy pink hydrangeas, tinged with green and white, giving viewers a detailed close-up of their beauty. Alongside the video, he shared a key reminder: “Give hydrangeas good, moist soil and a spot in sun or dappled shade.” These two essentials, he says, will help the plants “really shine.”
For those growing blue hydrangeas, Alan noted that acidic soil is necessary to maintain the color. He personally enjoys the pink variety, which thrives without the need for such pH-specific conditions.

Beyond sunlight and the right soil, consistent moisture is key for hydrangeas. These thirsty plants, especially in spring and early summer, need regular watering. Experts recommend a deep watering once a week during warmer months—ideally in the morning or evening to reduce evaporation. Overwatering, however, can make the leaves and flowers limp, so moderation is crucial.
Hydrangeas are particularly sensitive because of their dense, shallow roots, which dry out quickly. To help lock in soil moisture, mulching is highly effective. Louise Findlay-Wilson, founder of Blooming Lucky, recommends using homemade leaf mould each spring after pruning. It conditions the soil and helps retain water—ideal for thirsty hydrangeas.
