Kenyan rose grower Shalimar Fresh is reporting early success with the introduction of Revolution from De Ruiter Innovations, as retailers in the EU and UK are increasingly seeking brighter red rose varieties.
Unique Attributes of Revolution
“Revolution stands out due to its unique color and shape compared to other red roses in our portfolio,” said Arun Mishra, Head of Marketing at Shalimar Fresh. The company is targeting retail clients in the UK and EU, who are shifting away from traditional reds in favor of brighter hues. According to Mishra, the rose’s bright red color, excellent head size, and long vase life make it a promising addition to the market. So far, feedback from florists, wholesalers, and retailers has been very positive.
Growing Performance
Natarajan, General Manager of Operations at Shalimar Fresh, highlighted the strong growing results of Revolution. “Achieving a true bright red is challenging, but De Ruiter has delivered a variety that is truly unique in the market right now.” Under Naivasha conditions, the variety has a 45–52 day growth cycle and performs well in hydroponics. While the first two flushes produce large stems and leaves, by the third flush, the plant reaches an optimal structure for disease management and consistent quality when grown in soil. The company aims for a 4 cm head size, good opening, and reliable vase life.
Close Collaboration with De Ruiter
The partnership with De Ruiter East Africa has been close from the start. “We worked hand-in-hand with De Ruiter from small trials to commercial trials,” said Natarajan. Once the commercial trial succeeded, Shalimar Fresh quickly transitioned into full-scale production. Looking ahead, the collaboration is set to continue, with plans for future varieties. “We believe in maintaining a win-win situation. Our success is their success,” Natarajan confirmed.

Shalimar Fresh is confident in the future of Revolution. “The demand for bright red roses is high, and Revolution has the right look and performance,” said Mishra. “We expect it to deliver strong sales per square meter.”
