USDA Seeks Public Comment On Petition To Deregulate Orchid Developed Using Genetic Engineering

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) is currently soliciting public input regarding a petition to deregulate a genetically engineered Phalaenopsis orchid that has been developed to produce blue flowers.

The public will be given a 60-day period to review and provide feedback on the petition and APHIS’ assessment documents. During this time, individuals are encouraged to submit any relevant scientific data, studies, or research that may support their comments.

The Federal Register notice announcing the availability of the draft Environmental Assessment (EA) and draft Preliminary Plant Pest Risk Analysis (PPRA) can be accessed on the APHIS News page. Starting from June 4, 2025, members of the public will be able to submit their comments until August 4, 2025, entering “APHIS-2025-0005” into the Search field.
