Visser Greenhouses, a family-owned nursery in Manhattan, Montana, has been a cornerstone of the state’s horticultural industry for decades. The nursery, which supplies bedding plants and seedlings to numerous local greenhouses and garden retailers in Yellowstone County and beyond, recently welcomed Governor Greg Gianforte and Montana Department of Agriculture Director Jillian Streit for a tour of its facilities.
“Montana businesses like Visser Greenhouses exemplify the profound impact that family-run operations and value-added agriculture have on our communities, economy, and the next generation of Montana families,” Governor Gianforte said. “It is truly exciting to see this generational family business continue to grow, expand, and uphold its legacy of excellence in the Gallatin Valley.”
Established in 1972 and expanded in 1984, Visser Greenhouses boasts 50 greenhouses and offers the largest selection of annuals and perennials in Montana. During their visit, Governor Gianforte, Director Streit, and the nursery’s founder and owner, Don Visser, toured the expansive facilities. Visser Greenhouses supplies flowers to retailers in over 30 cities across the state, solidifying its position as a key player in Montana’s agricultural sector.
The Visser family’s commitment to quality and innovation is evident in their annual production of hundreds of thousands of plants. While primarily focused on wholesale customers, Visser Greenhouses opens its doors to the public each May for retail sales. In 2025 alone, the business grew over 25,000 mums and produced nearly 70,000 hanging baskets.
Visser Greenhouses stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of family-run businesses in Montana, showcasing how value-added agriculture can thrive and contribute to both local economies and statewide pride.
