From May 24 to October 26, 2025, the New York Botanical Garden (NYBG) presents “Van Gogh’s Flowers,” a vibrant celebration of plants and blooms inspired by the iconic painter.
Central to the exhibit is an extraordinary display of sunflowers—32 varieties ranging from modest four-footers to towering 12-foot giants—creating a breathtaking sea of yellow that visitors can wander through.
In total, the exhibit showcases 18,000 plants spanning over 300 species and cultivars. The sunflowers, grown from seed and seedlings cultivated since last summer in NYBG’s Nolen Greenhouses, include the ProCut variety, prized for early blooming and robust growth.
Alongside sunflowers, visitors will enjoy irises and a rotating selection of seasonal flowers like delphiniums, carnations, zinnias, and chrysanthemums, artfully arranged throughout the conservatory.
Complementing the living displays are contemporary botanical artworks and immersive installations by artists such as Lee Baker, Catherine Borowski, Amie Jacobsen, and Cyril Lancelin, whose works echo Van Gogh’s floral inspiration.
Interactive programs like “Plein Air Drop-In and Paint” invite guests to engage creatively with the garden’s floral beauty.
Families can also explore the LEGO Botanicals flower truck during the opening weekend, blending horticulture with playful creativity.
As evening falls on select nights, visitors can experience “Starry Nights,” an enchanting after-dark event featuring music, performances, food, drinks, and Van Gogh-themed drone light shows, all set amidst the glowing blooms.
This exhibit offers a unique opportunity to connect with the natural world through the lens of Van Gogh’s beloved sunflowers, allowing visitors to experience the same floral wonder that inspired the artist in the fields of Provence.
