Gardens are often seen as a perfect haven for mice, with plenty of natural shelter and an abundance of food. These rodents can easily avoid dangers and predators. While a single mouse may go unnoticed, an infestation can quickly escalate and cause significant damage to plants, consume newly planted seeds, and even infiltrate homes.
Mice are notorious opportunists and can cause a range of problems in gardens, including vegetable damage. To address this issue, gardening experts at Sefton Meadows Garden Centre have shared their top tips to keep mice at bay:
Use Potent Scent Deterrents and Aromatic Flora
Frequent application of strong scents around the garden, especially in areas where mice are likely to feed or nest, can make a noticeable difference. Scents known to repel mice include:
- Vinegar
- Eucalyptus
- Cedarwood
- Chilli
- Cinnamon
- Peppermint
- Cloves
- Cayenne pepper
Additionally, certain fragrant flowers and herbs can naturally deter mice:
- Lavender
- Marigolds
- Daffodils
- Rosemary
- Sage
- Mint
- Peppermint
Ultrasonic Devices
Despite some skepticism about the effectiveness of ultrasonic pest repellents, many users report success in garden settings, according to the Express. These devices are claimed to drive away a range of pests, including foxes, cockroaches, birds, and flies. For the best results, place these devices strategically near feeding and nesting sites, such as flower beds, vegetable plots, hedges, shrubs, and trees.
Create Your Own Mouse-Repellent Spray
Experts recommend creating a homemade mouse-repellent spray that can be applied around the garden. Alternatively, you can soak cotton wool balls in essential oils and place them in areas where mice are likely to dwell. The experts suggest using soaked cotton wool balls as the most effective deterrent, as the strong aroma is more likely to repel mice. However, using both methods can yield even better results.
To make your own mouse-repellent spray, mix two tablespoons of a potent essential oil (such as peppermint, lavender, tea tree, or eucalyptus) with 250ml of water. Shake the mixture vigorously and apply it wherever necessary around the garden. This solution can also help deter mice from entering the home.
