Gardeners are being reminded to respect noise regulations when tending to their plants and flowers, especially when using noisy equipment like lawnmowers and hedge trimmers.
While many assume they can care for their gardens at any time, local authorities have powers to issue fines up to £5,000 if noise becomes a statutory nuisance.
Daniel McAfee, Head of Legal Operations at Lawhive, explains that although there is no nationwide ban on mowing lawns early, excessive or persistent noise during unsociable hours can lead to abatement notices and even prosecution under the Environmental Protection Act 1990.
To keep the peace while nurturing your garden, it’s safest to operate noisy gardening tools between 9am and 7pm. Daniel advises gardeners to notify neighbors before using loud equipment, choose quieter tools when possible, and avoid long stretches of noisy activity, especially on weekends.
Social gatherings in gardens and late-night parties can also trigger complaints, as local councils may enforce the Noise Act 1996 during night hours (11pm to 7am) to prevent disturbances.
Ignoring official warnings can result in court action and hefty fines. These rules aim to balance the joy of cultivating beautiful plants and flowers with the community’s right to quiet enjoyment of their homes.
By following these guidelines, gardeners can continue to care for their greenery responsibly while maintaining good neighborly relations.
