Peace Lilies Produce Bigger Blooms When Fed Five Unusual Household Scraps

by jingji34

Peace lilies have long been a popular choice for indoor gardening due to their low-maintenance nature and ability to thrive with the right fertiliser. To keep these plants blooming, essential nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium are crucial. However, maintaining plant health doesn’t have to be costly, as everyday kitchen leftovers can provide these vital nutrients.

Chontelle Fossey, a plant expert at The Lily Pot, has shared some cost-effective plant care tips that utilise items commonly found at home. “If you’re anything like me, you’re always on the lookout for ways to keep your plants happy,” she said. “I wanted to share some plant care hacks that shouldn’t cost you much, if anything, as you likely have these products in your home already.”

Fish Tank Water: A Nutrient-Rich Boost

One of Chontelle’s top tips is using fish tank water to provide a nutrient-rich boost to peace lilies. “Fish tank water is rich in nitrogen and other nutrients that plants need to grow,” she explained. “Simply water your plants with fish tank water once a month to give them a nutrient boost.” However, it’s important to ensure that the water is clean, low in salt, and free from medications or harsh chemicals to avoid harming the plant.

Cinnamon: A Natural Antifungal

Cinnamon is another useful addition, especially for combating mould or mildew on peace lilies. “Did you know that cinnamon is a natural antifungal agent that can help prevent fungal growth in your plants?” Chontelle mentioned. “Sprinkle a small amount of cinnamon on the soil around your plants to prevent fungal diseases like root rot.”

Banana Peels: A Potassium-Rich Fertiliser

Banana peels are also beneficial as they contain several nutrients that promote plant growth. “Banana peels contain potassium, phosphorus, and calcium, which are essential for plant growth,” Chontelle remarked. To use banana peels, chop them into tiny pieces and bury them deep in the soil of your peace lily, where they will decompose over time.

Tea: A Growth-Boosting Antifungal

Tea, rich in tannic acid, can help prevent fungal growth while also boosting plant growth. “Tea contains tannic acid, which can help prevent fungal growth, with the added bonus of boosting plant growth,” Chontelle explained. For feeding your peace lily, prepare a weak tea (one bag with a couple of litres of water) and allow it to cool completely before watering the plant with it. “This is not a fertiliser that you can use exclusively on your plants, but it can help to give them a boost,” she added.

Coffee Grounds: A Source of Nitrogen

Coffee grounds are a great source of nitrogen, which is essential for plant growth. “Coffee grounds are a great source of nitrogen, which is essential for plant growth,” Chontelle said. “They also contain other nutrients, such as magnesium and potassium.” To use coffee grounds, simply sprinkle them around the base of your plants or mix them through your potting mix before repotting. However, use them sparingly, as too much can make the soil too acidic.

By utilising these eco-friendly and cost-effective methods, peace lilies can thrive without the need for expensive fertilisers.
