‘Genius’ Hack For Getting More Flowers From Your Roses Using Kitchen Waste

by jingji34

Gardeners across the country are enjoying the sight of their roses in full bloom, but a simple trick has been revealed to encourage even more blossoms. Jocelyn, a gardening expert and founder of The Reading Residence, has discovered that feeding spent banana peels to roses can significantly enhance their growth and flowering.

“I found that using banana skins to feed roses encourages bigger, better blooms,” Jocelyn said. “It might sound unusual, but adding banana peels to the soil around roses during the summer releases potassium. This nutrient helps regulate water and nutrient transport within the plant, leading to more abundant flowers.”

Potassium not only promotes flower growth but also enhances a rose’s ability to cope with stress and boosts its immune system. This can help the plant resist common fungal diseases in the summer, ensuring it remains healthy. Additionally, bananas are rich in calcium, magnesium, and phosphorous, which contribute to strong root development and flowering.

To apply this technique, simply save banana peels in a container until they start to discolor. Then, cut them into pieces and bury them in the soil near the roses. This method helps avoid attracting pests and allows the peels to decompose naturally, slowly releasing nutrients over time to support the flowers’ growth.

Jocelyn shared her process: “I kept the peels for a few days until they began to decompose, then chopped them up and spread them among my roses. I dug a little dirt out near the roots, scattered the peels, and covered them back over. It’s really that simple!”

Roses should be fed banana peels every two to four weeks, followed by a thorough watering to help the nutrients seep into the soil, according to the Express.

In the comments section of Jocelyn’s post, many gardeners praised her for this excellent tip and expressed their intention to try it out. One user commented, “How easy is that?! We eat at least 12 bananas a week and usually just throw them in the compost. I’ll start adding them to our roses now!”

Another person wrote, “What a great tip! I never knew that. I’m hoping to get some roses this year—I’m a very novice gardener—so I’ll definitely be trying this.”

A third commenter added, “Wow—I love tips like this! Thank you, Jocelyn… I’ve only got a few roses, but it will be bananas for pudding tonight and rose feeding tomorrow morning!”
