In the Hongta District of Yuxi, southwest China’s Yunnan Province, the arrival of June has brought a surge of activity to the local flower industry. Greenhouses are abuzz with the vibrant hues of roses, phalaenopsis orchids, and other blooms, while workers diligently pick, transport, and package the flowers each morning to meet the influx of orders.
During the first quarter of this year, the district produced 288 million stems of fresh-cut flowers, achieving a total output value of 379 million yuan (approximately $52.6 million). This success can be attributed to the district’s strategic use of its natural advantages and resources to enhance the flower industry chain. Improvements have been made in infrastructure, integrated water and fertilizer systems, and intelligent cultivation practices.
Hongta District has emerged as the core development zone for Yunnan Province’s flower seed industry. In 2024, the district dedicated 20,300 mu (1,353.33 hectares) of land to the cultivation of fresh-cut flowers, yielding 1.06 billion stems with an output value of 1.08 billion yuan.
