Pride Garden Blooms with Edible Flowers and Plants

by Anna

At Muskegon City Hall, nearly 30 volunteers came together to plant a vibrant garden bed designed in the shape of the progressive Pride flag. This unique garden features an array of colorful flowers, herbs, fruits, and vegetables, blending beauty with community spirit.

The garden includes strawberries, green beans, basil, rosemary, thyme, oregano, petunias, marigolds, succulents, and Dusty Miller—the latter chosen specifically to represent the light blue stripe of the flag, a rare color in June blooms.

The mix of edible plants and bright flowers creates a living mosaic that residents can enjoy both visually and through harvesting ripe fruits and vegetables.

Volunteers carefully planted and nurtured the 6-by-9-foot garden, ensuring that while fruits and vegetables are available for picking, the flowers remain intact to preserve the Pride flag’s striking design. This edible garden not only celebrates Pride Month but also symbolizes safety, inclusion, and community care.

Muskegon City Commissioner Katrina Kochin, who helped organize the project, expressed excitement about planting a garden that represents love and belonging. Local business owner Daisy Colcleasure funded the plants, calling the garden a “love note to the city.”

This garden stands as a colorful, living tribute to diversity and growth, inviting residents to connect with nature and one another during Pride Month and beyond.
