UK households told to put plants by windows and doors as June heats up

As the warmer weather approaches and a heatwave is predicted, gardening enthusiasts and plant lovers are being urged to take a simple yet effective step to combat hay fever symptoms: invest in indoor plants.

June marks the peak hay fever season for many, with pollen from various sources causing discomfort. Hay fever triggers vary throughout the summer months: tree pollen from March to May, grass pollen until July, and weed pollen from late June to September. For those affected, experts recommend turning to houseplants for relief.

Grass pollen is the most common allergen, and certain houseplants can help filter air pollutants and trap pollen particles that enter homes, thereby reducing symptoms. According to Haldi Kranich-Wood, a Wool Interiors Specialist at British Wool, “Make a pollen trap with houseplants. Some plants, like spider plants, peace lilies, or Boston ferns, act as natural air filters and can help trap airborne particles, including pollen. Positioning them near windows and doors can create a leafy line of defense. However, it is important to wipe their leaves regularly to remove trapped pollen.”

This advice is supported by experts at e-Surgery, an online doctor and pharmacy service. They note that certain plants can eliminate toxins in the air, which may help reduce allergy symptoms. “The best plants to keep indoors are those that remove formaldehyde and benzene, both of which can exacerbate allergies,” they explain. “Non-flowering plants are particularly beneficial for hay fever sufferers.”

Some plants can also absorb toxins through their leaves and release moisture, reducing dust in the air. Aloe vera is highly effective in this regard, with one plant being equivalent to nine biological air cleaners. Another excellent choice is the spider plant, which efficiently removes harmful compounds such as formaldehyde, styrene, carbon monoxide, and benzene. These plants are also highly adaptable, capable of photosynthesizing even in low light conditions.

The snake plant, also known as Mother-In-Law’s Tongue, is another top recommendation. “This plant is almost indestructible, making it ideal for those who may not have a green thumb,” says Kranich-Wood. “It is also excellent at cleaning the air, making it perfect for allergy sufferers.”

By incorporating these houseplants into their homes, individuals can create a healthier indoor environment and potentially alleviate hay fever symptoms during the upcoming heatwave.
