Southern Alberta Gardeners Eager As Planting Season Kicks Off Early

by Anna

With the May long weekend approaching, southern Alberta’s gardening season is officially underway—prompting a surge in activity at local garden centres.

Green Haven Garden Centre has seen a steady stream of customers ready to dig into the season. “They’re starting to get the plants,” said co-owner Gail Smith.

“Some people are planting out, knowing that if it does get cold, they’ll be prepared to protect them. But so far, the forecast looks really good.”

Traditionally, gardeners in the region wait until after the holiday weekend to avoid late spring frost. But this year, favourable weather has many starting early, though with caution. “So many years we’ve had long weekends where the weather can change,” Smith noted.

While the current conditions are ideal, experts warn the warm start could foreshadow a hot, dry summer. That raises concerns about potential water restrictions and the need for efficient water use in gardens.

Kathleen Sheppard, executive director of Environment Lethbridge, recommends using mulch to retain soil moisture and adopting smart watering habits. “Avoid watering in the middle of hot days or during windy conditions,” she advised.

To prepare for drought, gardeners are also turning to hardy, heat-tolerant plants. Smith suggests options like lavender, yarrow, sedums, zinnias, and portulaca—all well-suited for the region’s sunniest spots.

As southern Albertans get their hands dirty this weekend, many are balancing excitement with the realities of changing climate conditions, aiming for gardens that are both beautiful and sustainable.
