Iowa Master Gardeners Offer Support, Tours, And Plant Sale This Season

by Anna

As planting season takes root across Iowa, the Iowa State University Extension and Outreach office is offering resources to help gardeners succeed—from expert advice to public events and educational tours.

Jolinda Eggers, Natural Resources Program Coordinator, highlighted the role of the Hort Clinic, which is now open through mid-October. Staffed by trained Master Gardener volunteers, the clinic provides free, research-backed answers to gardening questions.

“Whether you’re dealing with pests, soil concerns, or simply choosing the right plant, our volunteers are here to help,” said Eggers.

Master Gardeners also manage five demonstration gardens—four on-site at the Scott County Extension Office—including annual/perennial, shade, commercial, and native/rain gardens. A fifth, known as the Pollinator Garden, is located at the Putnam Museum and is designated as an official Monarch Waystation.

The public is invited to walk through the demonstration gardens during regular hours, and a special opportunity for guided tours will be available during the annual Plant Sale and Pollinators’ Palooza event.

Scheduled for May 17 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., the event will be held at the Scott County Extension Office, where flowers, vegetables, houseplants, and more will be for sale.
