Tomatoes fresh from the garden are a delight, bursting with flavor and juiciness that store-bought varieties simply can’t match. Once you start growing your own, it becomes an obsession.
Here are 5 expert tips from Craig LeHoullier, author of Epic Tomatoes, to help you grow the best tomatoes possible.
1. Test Your Soil
Before planting, get your soil tested to determine its nutrient levels and pH. Tomatoes thrive in slightly acidic soil with a pH between 6.2 and 6.8. Once you know the soil’s needs, amend it with compost and fertilizer to ensure optimal growth conditions.
2. Space Your Plants Properly
The amount of space your tomato plants need depends on the variety. For indeterminate tomatoes (vining types), space them about 3 feet apart, with 4 feet between rows. For determinate or dwarf varieties (bushy types), space them about 2 feet apart. Ensure proper spacing for healthy air circulation and root development.
3. Use Collars for Protection
Cutworms are a common threat to young tomato plants. To protect your seedlings, create a loose collar around the base of each plant using paper or aluminum. This will shield the young plants while they grow strong enough to withstand pests.
4. Mulch for Success
Mulching your tomato plants helps in multiple ways: it suppresses weeds, reduces the risk of soil-borne diseases, and keeps moisture in the soil, especially during hot weather. Use organic materials like grass clippings or shredded paper, or opt for more durable options like landscape fabric.
5. Water Deeply and Consistently
Deep watering is essential for young tomato plants to develop strong roots. Watering at the base of the plant prevents moisture loss through evaporation and encourages deep root growth. Water frequently in the early weeks until the plants are well established.
By following these five tips, you can grow healthy, flavorful tomatoes that will make your garden shine.
