In 2024, Morocco achieved a historic milestone by surpassing Spain in tomato export value, securing third place in the world. This achievement highlights Morocco’s growing prominence in the global market, building on its 2022 success when it already led Spain in export volume.
The data, provided by the United Nations’ COMTRADE, reveals that Morocco’s export volume reached 903.09 million kilos, marking a significant 80.26% increase over the last decade.
While Morocco’s rise is notable, Mexico remains the largest global tomato exporter, shipping 2,063.6 million kilos and dominating 25.24% of the market. The Netherlands follows closely with 916.11 million kilos, while Spain, now in fourth place, exported 637.99 million kilos, reflecting a 33.19% decline from the previous decade.
Despite a slight decrease in global tomato export volumes, totalling 8,175.06 million kilos in 2024, the sector reached a record value of 11.58 billion euros. Morocco’s robust performance is attributed to its strategic focus on high-quality produce and expanding its market presence, especially in France.
In terms of revenue, Mexico leads with 3.28 billion euros, followed by the Netherlands at 1.76 billion euros, and Morocco at 1.57 billion euros. Spain, with 1.51 billion euros, holds the fourth position. The Netherlands boasts the highest average price per kilo at 1.92 euros, while Morocco’s average stands at 1.68 euros.
As Morocco continues to expand its global footprint, particularly in European markets, its success reflects the increasing importance of plant-based exports in the global agricultural landscape.
