From June 3 to 6, the Dutch Lily Days 2025 welcomed international visitors to explore the latest developments in the lily bulb sector. Thirteen prominent lily bulb exporters opened their test greenhouses, showcasing the properties and quality of their bulbs, as well as the potential of different varieties for a sustainable and resilient future.
A Focus on Resilience and Innovation
During this year’s event, thousands of visitors from around the world gathered to examine and judge the novelties on display. The discussions centered on the resilience and availability of lily bulbs, with a particular emphasis on the growing demand for pollen-free and double-bloomed varieties. These types of lilies are increasingly popular, with nearly all participants featuring one or more of these varieties.
Addressing Industry Challenges
Despite the positive mood and promising season ahead, exporters also addressed the challenges facing the industry. These include fluctuating exchange rates, US tariffs, and the ongoing public debate on crop protection in bulb cultivation in the Netherlands. The opening ceremony took place at De Jong Lilys in Andijk, where Sjaak van der Tak, a former chair of LTO Nederland, highlighted the importance of open dialogue among all parties in the supply chain. He also discussed the promising steps that breeders, growers, and exporters can take to contribute to a sustainable future both in the Netherlands and abroad.
Showcasing Sustainable Varieties
The event provided an excellent opportunity for industry professionals to immerse themselves in the world of lilies. They explored the innovations and challenges of the lily market, discovering how far the sector has come in developing more sustainable and resistant varieties. Participants also learned about the market opportunities for pollen-free and double-bloomed lilies, which continue to gain popularity.
