On the Great Plains, gardening can be a breeze with the right guidance, and Robyn Rebel is a prime example of that. Nestled on her family’s 143-year-old farm, Rebel runs the Taylor Nursery, a beloved destination for many southwest North Dakota families who consider it a springtime tradition.
Rebel emphasized the importance of selecting the right plants for the region, noting that not all trees and plants labeled for the local zone thrive here. “We really try to set our customers up for success,” she said. For instance, the “Autumn Breeze” maple, while technically suitable for the area, lacks the necessary hardiness.
With a dedicated staff, Rebel manages the Taylor Nursery, which is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year. Founded by the Stoxen sisters in 1955, the nursery offers a wide range of services and products, including landscape design, houseplants, vegetable and flower plants, home decor, and a variety of shrubs, perennials, and bareroot trees stored in a temperature-controlled environment.
This winter, the nursery’s 7,000-square-foot building, located just across from the Sit-N-Bull Bar & Cookhouse, will transform into a Christmas wonderland, complete with a brand-new addition. A major improvement, according to Rebel, is the newly constructed, permanent greenhouse added to the west side of the red building this spring.
